AN EPISODIC AND MOTIF ANALYSIS ON ERGUN SAV’S VARIATION OF LEYLA AND MECNUN STORY

Abstract

When people talk about love, the first names that come to mind are always Leyla and Mecnun. Some of us may have encountered these names in a masnavi, some in a novel or a story, and some of us in any contemporary song. Naturally, there are many variants of this “love story”, which affects a wide spectrum. One of these variants belongs to Ergun Sav. The story of “Leyla and Mecnun”, which is included in his book named Folk Stories, constitutes the subject of this study. In our study, firstly, the episode structure of the story was discussed in detail, and then the main motifs in the story were explained. At the end of our investigations, it has been determined that the episode structure and motifs in the classical folk tales are repeated in the story “Leyla and Mecnun”.
