Abstract

Turkish mythology holds a significant place in the formation of Turkish culture and way of life. In contemporary times, the positive impact of neo-paganism and the growing interest in ancient cultures have increased curiosity about Turkish mythology, necessitating a greater need for accurate information. These factors underscore the importance of studies on Turkish mythology. It is known that there are numerous female entities in Turkish mythology, particularly goddesses, who play a crucial role in both mythology and the lives of ancient Turks. This study focuses on seven selected goddesses—Ulu Ana, Yer Ana, Ak Ana, Ağaç Ana, Umay Ana, Küneş, and Aan Darhan Hatun—taking into account their mentions in myths, inscriptions, and epics, as well as their roles in the ancient Turkish belief system. Using the document review method, the study aims to list the characteristics of these goddesses, intending to reveal their similarities and differences. In line with the information obtained from the examined sources, the conclusion is drawn that the mother goddess figure held a significant place in the belief system and way of life of the Turks. Considering the examined myths and the results obtained, it is observed that there was a remarkably pronounced matriarchal structure in the belief system of the early Turks.
